About Math 9

Welcome to the Math 9 page. Here, you will learn about the work we do in math class, and the environment of the Math 9 classroom.
Math 9 is harder than Math 8, because you are unable to rely on your calculators at all times during your time in math class. This means you will need to calculate most of the work given to you, by the teacher, yourself.
Grade 8 math was just an entrance to high school, with a lot of the contents just being the tip of the iceberg. In grade 9, you dive deeper into the contents and materials in high school math, making it a worthy challenge and crucial to developing your thinking skills or just skills in general.
Math Curriculum

Reasoning and analyzing
-We use logic and patterns to solve puzzles and play games
-Using reasoning and logic to explore, analyze, and apply mathematical ideas
-Estimate reasonably
-Demonstrate and apply mental math strategies
-Use tools or technology to explore and create patterns and relationships, and test conjectures
-Model mathematics in contextualized experiences
Understanding and solving
-Apply multiple strategies to solve problems in both abstract and contextualized situations
-Develop, demonstrate, and apply mathematical understanding through play, inquiry, and problem solving
-Visualize to explore mathematical concepts
-Engage in problem-solving experiences that are connected to place, story, cultural practices, and perspectives relevant to local First Peoples communities, the local community, and other cultures
Communicating and representing
-Use mathematical vocabulary and language to contribute to mathematical discussions
-Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions
-Communicate mathematical thinking in many ways
-Represent mathematical ideas in concrete, pictorial, and symbolic forms
Connecting and reflecting
-Reflect on mathematical thinking
-Connect mathematical concepts to each other and to other areas and personal interests
-Use mathematical arguments to support personal choices
-Incorporate First Peoples worldviews and perspectives to make connections to mathematical concepts

Math Requirements

Incentive math is a harder course up to grade 9 that fully covers most of the contents for high school mathematics. Starting in grade 8, the program is meant for the students who have the ability to go above and beyond, or "Extending". These students are usually more motivated to learn.
Incentive mathematics 8 students should expect to tackle shapes and square roots, percentages, exponent law, fractions, linear relations and equations, polynomials, the Pythagorean theorem, and probability.
According to the official Palmer Incentive website, students must have at least a "Proficient", or 73% on their report card. If you fail to meet those requirements, you risk being kicked out of the program because you are not going above and beyond anymore. You should know that students in the Incentive grade 9 mathematics program will not be able to take pre-calculus 11 enriched in the subsequent year if the student does not achieve at least an A average.
Even if they have a 73% average, that only keeps you in the program, and not the enriched calculus. If students fail to maintain straight A's throughout the incentive course, they will actually just attend the standard calculus course. As of September 17th, 2025, Mr. Kwan teaches both incentive grade 8 and incentive grade 9 mathematics located upstairs in room 206.
Classroom Environment

The Math 9 class has a safe environment to be learning in. For example, you do not need to put your phone in a phone pocket, so you can use it to take pictures of equations on the board. Also, with your phone not by your side, you risk forgetting your phone when leaving the class, or afraid of it being stolen.
Now on to the teaching style of the class. The teaching style of this Math 9 class is pretty straightforward. We get a textbook to practice our skills on, and small booklets to take notes on. We also get to use whiteboards sometimes to minimize paper usage.
Conclusion
In summary, our Math 9 class is a great place to learn in, and the teaching style is good for everyone.
The contents of Math 9 are definitely harder than last year's Math 8. We learn harder equations while keeping the topics of Math 8.
I hope you learned a lot about the Math 9 class and/or classroom!
