Introduction To Social Studies 9/10

Social Studies is a big subject with many interesting topics. 
Two of these topics include:

-Ideologies like democracy, liberalism, and nationalism
-Collective identity (how groups see themselves) built over time and can change

The learning style of this Social Studies class uses group projects and independent working.

SS Contents 1

In Social Studies 9, students will learn about major events and changes in the world between the 17th and 19th centuries. The focus is on Western Civilization and Pre-Confederation Canada, that have a lot of connections to how these histories still affect our society and people today.

Key topics in Social Studies 9 include:​

  • The ongoing effects of imperialism and colonialism on Indigenous peoples

  • Global population and demographic changes

  • Geography of Canada, including landforms and geological processes

  • Political, social, economic, and technological revolutions

  • The rise of nationalism and the development of modern nation-states

Skills You Will Build

Throughout the course, students will learn and to strengthen their ability to:​

  • Make connections between the past and present issues

  • Think critically about different perspectives

  • Analyze primary and secondary sources (maps, historical documents, statistics)

  • Understand Canada’s development and its place in the global context

  • Develop informed opinions and arguments through writing, projects, and discussions

SS Curriculum

       The subjects that are being studied in "Social Studies" are known as "Humanities". These are studies of mankind, human cultures, subjects, philosophy, languages, values, etc. "Social Sciences" are relations, society, individuals, history refers to the passage of mankind, life, Earth, etc. "Geography And Environments" are studies of "land/earth," Earth sciences, and finally, "Economics and Politics" refer to "governments" and "businesses."

Here is the Social Studies 10 curriculum offered by Palmer Secondary:

Main Ideas:​
-How Politics Forms the Economical, Social, Ideological, and Geographical Environment.
-Able to make sound and moral judgments.
-Different ideas and attitudes result in developments in Canadian society.
-A Brief History of the Canadian Indigenous People’s and Discrimination in First Nations
-Employ practical skills for understanding, transmission, and analysis of concepts and results.

• Students are expected to be able to:

1)Understand the importance of certain events and periods in Social Studies.
2)International and regional conflicts make up the world that all our identities are part of.
3)Learn how to identify trustworthy and secure sites for research.
4)Evaluate, comprehend, and describe how different actions result in different causes and effects.
5)How historical injustices contribute to issues with Canadian identities.

Summary

Social Studies 9 include some of the contents from "Humanities" from grade 8, but a lot more sophisticated. The articles covered the topics that will be taught in Social Studies 9, and will prepare you or just for entertainment.
